I think its a much more poignant message when we are shown the struggle for normalcy alongside the more literal struggle. I may be wrong but I recall CBC being better about this than most news corps, that is when it comes to trying to show the human side of these bloody conflicts.

Maximum shock value apparently equals maximum viewership, and by extension profit, in the minds of too many journalists and news execs. I don't buy it, and I'm glad you don't either!

This is a really moving piece of writing Heather, you are definitely channeling Naomi Klein. The descriptions you give of the emergency ward in particular stood out for me, really scary stuff.

Its way too easy to forget, as members of the privileged few who get to live in the first world, that even though we like to believe slavery has been abolished, its still very much alive and well in the 3rd world, and often enough hidden in our own backyard. Out of sight shouldn't mean out of mind!

I think that of all the travel photo journalism out there these pictures capture feelings and ambiance almost as well as I have ever seen. I suggest the powers that be send this woman with a camera to any country anywhere with her camera and a reasonable budget. This work deserves to be seen! National Geographic...

In NE Cambodia in a school 5 km west of Ban Lung 2, cluster bombs are waiting in the bushes 5 metres from the school toilet. No one cares, no one will come and deal with them. The press who are about shout it from the roof tops but still no one cares or comes. And then their are the Royals, unemployed parasytes who swan about with the 'press' working their nicely manicured nails to the, well, end of their nail polish. Get real world media!! There is that that matters and then there is, umm, Wills and Kate? Oh gag, please spare me.

feels strange to say "beautiful work heather" considering the muse is corruption disguised as progress," but i do so anyway because your report and photos are spectacular.
i'm forever reminded by indigenous amazonianians who anticipate volcanic eruptions as nature's response and along side their 100 proof shot--
an irish bumper sticker that says something like, "the odds aren't good, but we should keep doing whatever it is we do anyway."
